But our music has to reach beyond our religious beliefs to connect on a greater level. I wanted to speak to everybody,” says Haddon. “That influenced my approach to the songs of Revealed. They are not ‘religious’ songs so much as spiritual songs that can connect to everybody.”

The first two singles being released off the CD are “The Word” and I’m Alive.” On both, Deitrick’s trademark sound of contemporary Gospel with an urban edge abounds greatly. “I’m Alive,” a spiritual testimony of endurance and motivation, speaks words of encouragement to listener’s hearts. Embedded with funky drum arrangements and acoustic guitars, Haddon attests that you can pull through any trial with the strength of your faith. The second single, “The Word,” is a passionate ballad that will move listeners to display love in their everyday lives.

REVEALED also includes the super hot “Love Him Like I Do,” featuring Ruben Studdard and Mary Mary. The single has become one of 2008’s hottest R&B Gospel anthems, and earned Haddon a BET Award nomination for Best Gospel Artist. Peaking at #9 on the Billboard Hot Gospel Songs chart, this popular single maintained a chart presence for over 32 weeks.

Bells will be ringing

Congratulations to Delmika and David Pope. Man is said to wear three names. The first is the name one is given at birth. The second is the family name one inherits. The third is the name (reputation) one makes for himself in life.

In Ecclesiastes 7:1 the Bible says, 'A good name <is> better than precious ointment...' This is especially true for the people of God. The Bible says that our good works are to be done not to receive glory for ourselves but so that others will see them and glorify God (Matthew 5:13-16). This involves the type of reputation we build and guard for the glory of God.

In Revelation 14:13 the Bible says, 'Then I heard a voice from heaven saying to me, 'Write: 'Blessed <are> the dead who die in the Lord from now on.' ‘‘Yes,' says the Spirit, 'that they may rest from their labors, and their works follow them.' This indicates that the way we live in life for the Lord will outlive us in the minds and hearts of others. This is what is meant by influence and reputation.

The Bible says that the world will know us by our fruit (John 15:8-16; 1Timothy 5:9-10). That is, others will observe our conduct and make an evaluation of Christianity by what they see us do. This is one reason why keeping a good name for the Lord is so important.

In 2 Timothy 2:19 the Bible says, 'Nevertheless the solid foundation of God stands, having this seal: 'The Lord knows those who are His,' and, 'Let everyone who names the (name of Christi depart from iniquity.' One reason why Christians should pay close attention to their own reputation is that we wear the name of Christ as our own. If we ruin our own name by the things we do, His name also suffers. Those outside the church are given opportunity blaspheme Christianity as being a hypocritical, sham of an institution when Christians openly behave in an ungodly fashion (2 Samuel 12:14; 2 Corinthians 6:3; 1 Corinthians 5:1-13).

Submitted by S. Duncan

"But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.” 1 Peter 1:15,16

VolleyBall, Football and Frisbee at the Beach

Come Join 20 something "A day at the Beach."

We Will be palying beach Volleyball, Football or Frisbee.

Bottled water will be provided.

Things to remember:

invite a friend, bring sun screen, dress appropritely and comfortable, bring lots of energy, smiles, team work, laughter, and quarters to pay the meter.

Get ready to have fun under ther sun!!

Host: 20 Something
Location: Lifeguard Operations Training Center
2600 The Strand, Manhattan Beach, CA 90266

When: Saturday, June 28, 12:00PM

Contact Person: Uganda for any additional Info at the number listed.
Phone: (310)999-2589

FREE UTILITY JOBS TRAINING PROGRAM FOR YOUNG ADULTS-

This is an excellent job training program for young adults (18 years old or older) interested in pursuing good paying craft jobs in the utility industries.
LADWP News: 30 STUDENTS RECEIVE CERTIFICATE OF COMPETENCY

The Los Angeles Trade Tech College (LATTC) and its Bridges to Success Program will host a celebratory event on May 22, 2008 recognizing 30 students who have completed the Utilities and Construction Prep Program – a seven-week intensive training preparing them for entry-level jobs in the utilities and construction industries. LOUIS — Southern Baptists, as a rule, do not drink. But once a month, young congregants of the Journey, a Baptist church here, and their friends get together in the back room of a sprawling brew pub called the Schlafly Bottleworks to talk about the big questions: President Bush, faith and war, the meaning of life, and “what’s wrong with religion.”

“That’s where people are having their conversations about things that matter,” the Rev. Darrin Patrick, senior pastor and founder of the Journey, said about the talks in the bar. “We go where people are because we feel like Jesus went to the people.”

The Journey, a megachurch of mostly younger evangelicals, is representative of a new generation that refuses to put politics at the center of its faith and rejects identification with the religious right.

They say they are tired of the culture wars. They say they do not want the test of their faith to be the fight against gay rights. They say they want to broaden the traditional evangelical anti-abortion agenda to include care for the poor, the environment, immigrants and people with H.I.V., according to experts on younger evangelicals and the young people themselves.

“Evangelicalism is becoming somewhat less coherent as a movement or as an identity,” said Christian Smith, a sociology professor at the University of Notre Dame. “Younger people don’t even want the label anymore. They don’t believe the main goal of the church is to be political.”

About 17 percent of the nation’s 55 million adult evangelicals are between the ages of 18 and 29, and many are troubled by the methods of the religious right and its close ties to the Republican Party.

In a January 2007 survey of 1,000 young people for the book “Unchristian,” one of its authors, David Kinnaman, president of the Barna Group, which studies Christian trends, found that 47 percent of born-again Christians ages 40 and under believed that “the political efforts of conservative Christians” posed a problem for America.

None of that means younger evangelicals have abandoned the core tenets of their faith, including a belief in the physical resurrection of Jesus and the literal truth of the Bible. They think abortion and homosexuality are sins.

And so far, there is no clear evidence that supporting a broader social agenda has led young evangelicals to defect from the Republican Party in great numbers, as many liberals have predicted.

But shifts in thinking among younger evangelicals may lead to an easing of the polarization that has defined the country’s recent political landscape, many of them said.

“The easy thing is to fight, but the hard thing is to put your gloves down and work together towards a common cause,” said the Rev. Scott Thomas, director of the Acts 29 Network, which helps pastors start churches. “Our generation would like to put our gloves down. We don’t want to be out there picketing. We want to be out there serving.”

On a rainy Tuesday night, six couples from the Journey, all under 35, went to Jim and Megan Beckemeier’s home for a weekly Bible study.

“Did you see my boy Barack today?” Mike Fine, 28, said to Mr. Beckemeier, 31, as they sat down, referring to a speech Senator Barack Obama gave earlier that day. “I thought he did well, really well.”

Some in the Bible study grew up in evangelical homes, others in mainline families, and still others outside the church. Asked if they considered themselves evangelicals, they squirmed.

“I’m comfortable with the word as long as it means a believer of Christ who wants to spread his teaching,” Ryan Witt, 30, said. “But it doesn’t automatically mean that you are against stem cell research or voting for McCain.”

The older generation, the congregants said, had drifted away from Jesus’s example.

“What the church has done wrong is that it has created these ‘holy huddles’ of Christian magazines, music and schools that have set them apart from the world because the world is bad,” said Mr. Beckemeier, who grew up in an evangelical family. “Instead of doing what Christ did, and bring light to the world, they retreat from it.”

Younger evangelicals focus more on “the ethic of Jesus” than on political issues, said Adam Smith, editor of the religion and culture magazine Relevant. They gravitate toward practical social action, Mr. Smith and others said, like working with poor, academically troubled inner-city schools, a priority at the Journey, or against human trafficking. While older evangelicals are also involved in such issues, younger people shy away from their emphasis on political organizing.

“They are very much turned off by the suit-and-tie power brokers of the evangelical right,” said David P. Gushee, professor of Christian ethics at Mercer University in Georgia.

Within American evangelicalism more broadly, there has been some rethinking of its image and priorities. Younger evangelicals feed that new drive and are beginning to lead it. Their efforts have resonated with some older leaders, but they have also created a backlash.

Jonathan Merritt, 25, is a graduate of Liberty University, the son of a former president of the Southern Baptist Convention and himself a former Republican precinct chairman in Georgia. A seminarian, he now calls himself an independent conservative. In March, he introduced an environmental initiative urging Southern Baptists to do more to combat climate change, saying their current position was “too timid.”

After beginning with 44 signers, the initiative now has about 250, including pastors, university professors and the current and past presidents of the Southern Baptist Convention. But Richard Land, president of the convention’s powerful advocacy arm, the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission, did not sign the initiative. He said his group had concerns about it that they had made known to some signers, who then rescinded their support.

On May 15, Mr. Land’s group introduced its own online petition called “We Get It!” that questions the science around global warming and warns that “millions of people around the world are threatened by extreme environmental policies.”

“There is so much resistance to the environmental initiative because it is a threat to the right-wing agenda that has crept into the Southern Baptist Convention,” said Dean Inserra, 27, a registered Republican and pastor of the Well, a Baptist church in Tallahassee, Fla., who signed Mr. Merritt’s initiative. “How is taking care of God’s creation a political issue? Since I am pro-life, I am pro-environment.”

Southern Baptist leaders, especially in Missouri, have criticized unconventional church outreach methods, like the Journey’s meetings at the Schlafly Bottleworks.

For Roger Moran, a lay Baptist leader in Missouri, being theologically conservative but culturally liberal could put evangelicals on the path to sin. To underscore that concern, the state convention will no longer finance start-ups of churches like the Journey.

“Any movement that undermines or takes away from the seriousness of sin, we need to pay close attention to,” Mr. Moran said.

Liberal evangelicals say the difference in approach and priorities among younger evangelicals signals a shift in their political allegiances, too. Surveys, so far, give a murkier picture.

A report last year by the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press indicated that in 2001, 55 percent of white evangelicals ages 18 to 29 identified themselves as Republican, far more than in the broader population. In 2007, 40 percent did. But a more recent Pew poll only of registered voters found that 60 percent of young white evangelicals identified themselves as Republican or leaning Republican, the same as all white evangelicals.

“This is the most pro-life generation I’ve seen,” said John Mark Reynolds, professor of philosophy at the evangelical Biola University in La Mirada, Calif. “I don’t have any evidence that being green is going to trump pro-life issues in the voting booth.”

In a column for The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Mr. Merritt wrote that some younger evangelicals might vote for Mr. Obama, despite calling themselves conservatives.

Without a clear evangelical presidential candidate, he said, the younger generation seeks “which party stands for the issues their faith requires them to support.”

Mr. Patrick of the Journey estimates that 60 percent of his 2,000-member congregation are Democrats. At a discussion at the brew pub about immigration, the congregation’s varied political views came out, as some members sympathized with illegal immigrants and others criticized them.

“It’s the first church I’ve been in with such opposing views,” said Johanna Richards, 22, the daughter of a Baptist minister and an immigrant outreach worker for the church.

Letitia Wong, 32, who said she favored a fence along the Mexican border to keep out illegal immigrants, added: “As much as our faith informs our political views, we aren’t united in one way of thinking. What unites us at the Journey is the power of Jesus Christ.”

To Pick a President

Come join the us at 20 Something Young Adult Ministry as we particpate in an lively open dicussion about the upcoming Presidential Election. For me, the gift was athletic ability.”

He and his brother, Durran, are co-founders of the Shaun Alexander foundation which supports various organizations, including the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Alexander’s memoir noted that both he and his wife Valerie were both virgins when they were married. They now have three daughters – Heaven, Trinity, and Eden.

Moving east in the country, Colts punter Hunter Smith not only likes to talk about his faith, but recently began a second career to proclaim it – as a Christian rock artist. He met one of the band members, Chris Wilson, while leading worship together for a young-adult ministry at their church and formed the band Connorsvine. The band has opened for big name Christian acts such as TobyMac and Mercy Me.

“I feel just as strong of a call to worship leading and ministering through music as I do in football,” said Smith, according to beliefnet.com.

He also just released a Christian novel which he co-wrote with fellow NFL player, kicker Jason Elam of the Denver Broncos, titled Monday Night Jihad. The book narrates the story of a pro-football player who returns to his former profession as part of a special ops team responsible for stopping terrorist attacks.

But perhaps the most prominent evangelical Christian in the NFL is none other than Colts coach Tony Dungy who led the team to its 2007 Super Bowl win. Just last week, Dungy announced that he will continue as head coach of the Colts. He said after praying and discussing it with his family he felt that coaching was the best pulpit for his message.

“I enjoy my job, the players, the staff we have here and Bill (Polian) and Jim,” Dungy told reporters. “But it is a platform and that’s something I talked to my wife and pastor about. I said ‘I could stop and start a ministry, but I might not have a platform like this.’”

“I look at this as a job,” he said, “but I also look at it as a ministry…I might not have as effective a ministry as I have right now.”

Earlier in his career while working as head coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, he considered leaving football to work with a prison ministry.

I dare you.

I bet you can’t do it.

I bet you won’t do it.

I bet you won’t commit to a month of prayer.

Why?

Because young adults don’t pray.

We’re too busy. We have too much to do. The college basketball season just started. My NFL team is in the playoffs plus I have to wash my car…God did not give me rims to keep them dirty.

Young adults don’t pray.

Especially on a Saturday, we have hair appointments and nail appointments and body waxing.

Young adults don’t pray.

Our lives are perfect. What would we even pray about? All our friends are saved. You’ve already found your perfect love or maybe your single and you finally got your libido in control (Well kinda). You have a good job and your pockets are full.

I dare you. I dare you to show up this month every Saturday at 11am to pray for one hour. I dare you to prove it’s not true what they say about us. We are committed. We are spiritually mature. We are selfless and not selfish.

If you choose to accept this challenge be prepared to fellowship for lunch at Chili’s located at 3490 W Century Blvd Inglewood, CA 90303 directly after prayer.

Never Alone-Cjon Damitri Patterson and Bishop Virgil Patterson

We love you Cjon...your music and spirit will live forever.

Cjon Patterson & Bishop - Never Alone

Add to My Profile | More Videos

Do you have a testimony?

The New Year brings opportunity for reflection and gratitude. Has God done anything spectacular for you this year? Can you identify the moments in your life in which God rescued you from a dire situation, rescued you from yourself? As a young adult in the church you may not have an opportunity to speak about what God has done for you. You may not get to preach. You may not have a solo, but do you have a testimony? You should. Take time and think about it. Where has God showed up in your life?

A 20Something Christmas

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_WAlvwXz2qCs/R1ywPv_77YI/AAAAAAAAADU/5G8Wd9HbI-Q/s400/Slide1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5142178659179425154" />

We take requests!

Is there something you would like to see or hear on your blog? The goal of the ministry is to provide fellowship for young adults from eighteen to early thirties. Oftentimes this fellowship comes in the form of mentoring. Below is a great article on the subject.

Gospel.com

“As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.” It’s one of the more famous proverbs in the Bible, and it points to a basic truth: one of our most important jobs as Christians and as human beings is to help each other grow in the faith.

One of the ways we do this every day is by treating people kindly, by praying for others, and by encouraging people who could use an uplifting word—and sometimes challenging them when they stray. This sort of support—”sharpening,” if you will—is also an important part of Christian disicpleship. Mentoring is more formalized way that believers can help each other. A mentor is a spiritual tutor, somewhere between a friend and a teacher. A mentor offers the wisdom of his or her experience to another Christian, helping them to mature in their own faith. The Bible is full of examples of good mentors.

Anyone can be a mentor to someone else. But since a good mentor is strongly rooted in Christ and has experience with life’s ups and downs, it’s most common to see adult Christians mentoring young (or new) Christians. Several of these articles are thus geared toward youth ministry, but are relevant to anybody who’s interested in becoming a mentor to a fellow believer:

The Power of a Mentor explains why mentoring is so important to young people today, and argues that it’s one of the most effective ways to help young people make wise spiritual choices.

Great at Being the Number Two Guy describes the qualities that go into being an effective mentor. It’s geared especially toward church and youth group leaders.
In Fragile Strangers, Denise McKinney describes the great challenge of ministering to orphaned and foster kids—and suggests that mentoring is a powerful way that you can help.

Mentoring is an important role, but it’s a special one in that any Christian can fill it. You don’t have to be a pastor or a theologian to help a brother or sister in Christ through a tough spot in their life. Read through these articles and see if mentoring—either in an official capacity through your church or a ministry, or in an informal capacity in your relationship with somebody—is what God is calling you to
do!

Worth a thousand words

I'd like to thank Reana Jenkins for stepping up and volunteering to be one of the official photographers for 20 Something Young Adult Ministry. That's according to a study just released by a Christian Resources of more than 1,000 young adults. Researchers found two major contributing factors behind this common church departure:

1. life changes
2. a lack of personal relationships in the church

While 30 percent of those who left the church said they made a conscious decision to leave after high school, the majority surveyed attributed their disassociation to either work responsibilities, moving away from their home church or moving on a college campus.

The survey found that the majority of young adults who remained in church between age 18 and 30 felt attending church was a vital part of their lives, as well as a helpful factor in their decision-making.

Relationships are often the glue that keep people in church or serve as the attraction to begin attending again following a period of absenteeism Many people are deeply influenced by friends and loved ones.

Young adults desire the same thing as any other demographic group relationship. Establish that crucial foundation while they're in high school and you're likelier to keep them in church. To remain in church, a person must have experienced the value of the teaching and relationships at church and see the relevance for the next phase of life.

I know this to be true because my son who is 24 stop going to church when he was 16. I got tired of fussing on Sunday morning about get up get dress.

He would set with the other youth and sleep. One day I looked around my old church and most of the young adult were gone. Our young adult choir became smaller and smaller. What do you think? Why do our young adults leave the church for a period of time and what can we do to keep them from leaving?

A 20 Something Christmas

Join us for a 20 Something Christmas.

20 Something Young Adult Ministry will be celebreting the birth of Christ on Saturday, December 15th 2007, at 6pm. I am anxious to follow-up with the people I interviewed with and know I should send some kind of "thank you" note as well. What is the protocol for appropriate follow-up?

- Job Seeker, 23, Kansas City

Dear Job Seeker,

Congratulations on a great interview! In terms of follow-up, there are various schools of thought on protocol, but I'll give you a summary of what I have heard most from employers, as well as what I did that worked well back in my interviewing days.

First, never leave an interview without the business card of the interviewer so that you have their email address, mailing address and phone number. If they don't offer it, ask for one. I also encourage job seekers to create business cards of their own to exchange that includes your name, email and phone number. Keep it simple, sleek and professional.

In terms of follow-up and thank you notes here is what I suggest:

1. The day of the interview, send an email to the individual(s) you interviewed with thanking them for their time and for the opportunity. Keep it brief and professional. Include appropriate salutations, mention one thing from the interview to jog their memory of your interaction, and also indicate when you will be following up with them, I recommend one week from the interview. This is also an opportunity to answer or further address any question you felt you didn't cover well in the interview; the brilliance that occurred to you in the elevator ride down to your car after you left the office. Also, make sure when you send an email, that it displays your name when it appears in someone's in box - not an abbreviation or nickname. Send a test email to yourself and a friend to confirm this.

Here is an example of a follow-up email:

Subject line: Thank You for the Interview

Dear Mr. or Ms. X,

It was nice to meet you today and I am enthusiastic about being a candidate for xyz position and the opportunities you presented. I enjoyed discussing my love of xyz with you and learning about xyz regarding your company. (If applicable:) I gave some additional thought the question you presented to me about xyz and (insert response here). Thank you for your time and consideration and I look forward to following up with you on Monday.

Sincerely,

Job Seeker

2. Send a hand-written "Thank You" note on nice stationary or buy a very simple card (no butterflies, poems, or flowers please). In this note, again thank them for the opportunity and their time. Keep it short and sweet. If there is something more personal you discussed in the interview, like a shared hobby or a future trip they are taking, this is a good place to reflect upon that.

3. If you do not hear back from the potential employer, call them on the day you noted you would follow-up. I recommend NOT calling first thing in the morning, right after lunch, or at the end of the day as these are times people tend to be busier. When you call, re-introduce yourself, remind them of when you interviewed and for what position. Ask them if they have made a selection, and if not, when they plan too. Again, keep it short and thank them for their time.

And one more thing, I hear many twenty-somethings be very self-critical after an interview so it is refreshing to hear that you feel good about it. Even if you don't get the job, I encourage you to leave interviews with a positive intention. You are doing the right thing by proactively following up. Now go start writing your emails and thank-you notes!

- Christine

Please send me your questions by posting them in the comments section below. You can also email me at christine@huffingtonpost.com

TIDBIT

I am often asked what type of questions one should ask when presented with the question, "Do you have any questions for me?" during an interview. Whatever you do, don't say you don't have any!

Here a list of topics to put into your interviewing back pocket. Use these to get your juices flowing and make sure to tailor your questions to fit the moment and specific job you are interviewing for.

1. Questions about their professional background: How long have you worked here? What was your first job? Did you always know you wanted to go into this field? What do you enjoy the most about this field/your job?

2. Questions about the company that shows you've done some research and that you are interested in learning more: I read on line that this organization supports xyz charity or organization, can you tell me more about this? Are there weekly staff meetings? How involved is the CEO or owner in the daily operations?

3. Questions about the company culture and benefits: What kind of hours do people work? How many people work for the company? How long do people usually stay with the company? Is there a 401K program? Health benefits?

4. Questions about the position: What do you think is the most important skill required to excel at this position? Do you think there is a large learning curve to this position? What is the training protocol?

Remember, when interviewing, it's key to be confident without being arrogant or demanding. The more prepared you are, the more calm you will be. Be sure to really listen and stay 100% present. As soon as your mind starts wandering to the next question or ahead to questions you may have, you are going to loose your stride. Practice your interviewing skills with a trusted advisor, mentor or interviewing service. Don't go in cold turkey

20 Something Meet and Greet -Sunday November 18th 2007

You are invited to meet other Young Adults at a 20 Something Meet and Greet this Sunday, November 18th 2007. There is a phase when you are young, there is a phase when you are middle aged. There is a phase when you are old and a phase when you are very old. No one can prevent traveling through such phases, but you can determine, in partnership with God, what you do with each phase of your life.

When you are young, you are able to do as you like and go wherever you want; but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands and others will direct you and take you where they want you to go. (John 21:18 TLB)

Now that you are young, you can decide how you will live your life.
